First was AVX2 mandatory support, then 64 bit OS, then 64 bit through the driver stack, than Metal supporting graphics. Usually they stop when they hit a technical reason to stop. I understand this is both a blessing and a curse, but like, I had Windows 10 running on a Core Duo Yonah system and it all worked, that's 13 years. It's unlikely they continue to support 2015 hardware for 10+ years and even more unlikely they abandon Intel Mac buyers within a year.Īny idea what, technically, is the reason for cutting off some macs at only 6 years of support? While that would be good for mobile, for an iMac it seems a bit short. Maybe they are choosing to slowly remove a gen from software support each year instead of dropping support for all x86 Macs at once later on. My suspicion is that this will continue for some years until no x86 Macs are left. Just offering some insight into where Apple usually feels obligated to offer support. Well, I have no idea really why Apple decided on this list. This time is different. This one does seem date based, but it hasn't been like this before, it was usually that they kept going until there was a technical barrier (even if it was trivial to shim in support with a patcher). One was mandatory AVX, then 64 bit, then 64 bit for all drivers, then Metal. So it makes sense that a 2014 Mac Mini that you could buy brand new in 2018 would still be supported when a 2014 iMac that was discontinued in 2015 or 2016 might not be.Įvery one of the last few times a support list was decreased, you could find a technical cutoff with a bit of digging, not a date based one. Very long-lived products like the 2012 13" MacBook Pro with optical drive, or the 2014 Mac Mini remain supported by Apple for much longer than devices that are updated each year.
